Order Effects and Vowel Decay in Short-term Memory: the Neutralization Hypothesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Information stored in short-term memory decays extremely fast compared to the content of long-term memory. The nature of this memory loss being little known (random or systematic), this paper examines the presentation order effect in the light of the neutralization hypothesis, according to which the first vowel in a pair decays toward [@], while retained in short-term memory. Twelve French listeners participated in three AX roving discrimination sessions. For each of the 10 vowel categories of French, a prototype and four satellite tokens were synthesized. Tokens were paired with themselves as well as with the prototype (in both orders of presentation). Results revealed minor or major order effects within every phonetic category. However, the neutralization hypothesis could not account for more than 50% of these asymmetries. An alternative model adopting the periphery of the vowel space as a reference area, appears to fit best with our data.

The Duration of Auditory Sensory Memory for Vowel Processing: Neurophysiological and Behavioral Measures
Speech perception behavioral research suggests that rates of sensory memory decay are dependent on stimulus properties at more than one level (e.g., acoustic level, phonemic level). The neurophysiology of sensory memory decay rate has rarely been examined in the context of speech processing. In a lexical tone study, we showed that long-term memory representation of lexical tone slows the decay ...

Abstract Background: Diabetes is a common disease that is characterized by hyperglycemia or High blood sugar. Central neuropathic is one of the most common Diabetic complications. The increase of blood sugar levels can cause adverse effects on cognitive functions such as information processing speed, memory, and the learning. The aim of this study was to assess short term memory function in pa...
متن کاملEffects of fresh, aged and cooked garlic extracts on short- and long-term memory in diabetic rats
Objective: The present study was hypothesized to investigate the beneficial effects of fresh, aged, and cooked garlic extracts on blood glucose and memory of diabetic rats induced by streptozocine (STZ). Material and Methods: Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of STZ (60 mg/kg body weight). An oral dose of 1000 mg/kg of each garlic extract was given daily for 4 weeks after dia...
متن کاملStimulus order effects in vowel discrimination.
In same-different discrimination tasks employing isolated vowel sounds, subjects often give significantly more "different" responses to one order of two stimuli than to the other order. Cowan and Morse [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 79, 500-507 (1986)] proposed a neutralization hypothesis to account for such effects: The first vowel in a pair is assumed to change its quality in memory in the direction of...
متن کاملEffects of exercise on spatial memory deficits induced by nucleus basalis magnocellularis lesions
Introduction: Previous studies have shown that exercise enhances cognitive and functional capacities in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we investigated the effect of long-term (60 days) and short- term (10 days) exercise on the spatial memory deficits in an animal model of AD. Methods: Fifty male rats were divided into 5 groups 1) intact, 2) sham, 3) sham-Alzheimer 4) ...
